Answer:
$124.93

Total Inflation: 24.93%

Based on the US Consumer Price Index, you need $124.93 in February 2026 to purchase the same goods and services that cost $100.00 in January 2021.

Step-by-Step Inflation Calculation
Using the CPI Index Table

Starting CPI Value = 261.582
Ending CPI Value = 326.785

Inflation Rate
= ((CPI End - CPI Start) ÷ CPI Start) × 100
= ((326.785 - 261.582) ÷ 261.582) × 100
= (65.203 ÷ 261.582) × 100
= 0.249264 × 100
Inflation Rate = 24.93%

Next, multiply your starting dollar amount by one plus the inflation rate as a decimal.

1 + 0.2493 = 1.2493
$100.00 × 1.2493 = $124.93

The resulting dollar amount is the inflation-adjusted value of your original dollar amount.

Current U.S. Inflation Rate

2.4%

February 2026 vs. February 2025

Consumer prices increased by 2.4% year over year.

When inflation increases, the buying power of the US dollar decreases because it buys less than it did before. Use the inflation calculator to find the equivalent buying power across time for any amount in US dollars, USD.

What is Inflation?

Inflation is the rate of increase in prices measured by the CPI over a given period of time. Calculating inflation rate is basically a percentage change problem. Find the difference between two CPI measures, divide by the earlier measure, and multiply the result by 100.

You can use the US inflation rate to see how the buying power of money decreases as inflation increases. For example if you had $100 in January 2015, you would need $138.23 in July 2025 to buy the same goods and services. Plug your inputs into the calculator, or follow the step-by-step instructions to see how to calculate inflation.

What is the US Consumer Price Index?

The US CPI is the average change in price for an amount of goods and services paid by consumers. Generally when you see CPI data it is the CPI-U which is the Consumer Price Index for urban consumers. This index represents about 93% of US consumers. The United States Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) has published the CPI since 1913.

This inflation calculator sources monthly inflation data published by the BLS. Using the calculator, select any two time periods to find the change inflation rate from one point in time to another. Calculate yearly inflation by selecting December to December or Annual Avg. from the drop-down menus.

Other consumer price index and BLS data is published at the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics website. You can find the most recent CPI news here.

Calculate Inflation Using CPI Data: The Complete Guide

Learn how to calculate inflation rate change between any two time periods using CPI data. This guide provides the percent change in inflation rate formula, step-by-step instructions, and practical examples.

The Inflation Rate Formula

Inflation affects the buying power of the US dollar. Generally inflation goes up over time and it takes increasingly more money to buy the same goods and services.

You can get a better sense of the effect of inflation on buying power by comparing the inflation rate between two points in time. Using historic CPI data, first calculate the percent change in inflation rate between two points in time to find the overall inflation rate change.

The inflation rate formula is:

Inflation Rate = ((CPI End - CPI Start) ÷ CPI Start) × 100

Where:

  • CPI End = Consumer Price Index at the ending date
  • CPI Start = Consumer Price Index at the starting date
  • Result = Percentage change, which is the inflation rate

Calculate Inflation Rate: Step-by-Step Instructions

Say you wanted to calculate the rate of inflation between January 2020 and January 2024 using CPI data.

  1. Step 1: Find the Starting CPI Value

Locate the Consumer Price Index value for your starting date using the CPI data table below or from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Note that the BLS publishes modern CPI index data out to three decimal places. Our table below rounds these values to one decimal place.

Example: For January 2020, the CPI = 257.971

  2. Step 2: Find the Ending CPI Value

Locate the Consumer Price Index value for your ending date.

Example: For January 2024, the CPI = 308.417

  3. Step 3: Apply the Inflation Formula

Subtract the starting CPI from the ending CPI, divide by the starting CPI, then multiply by 100.

Inflation rate formula: Inflation = ((CPI end - CPI start) ÷ CPI start) × 100

    Inflation Rate = ((308.417 - 257.971) ÷ 257.971) × 100
    Inflation Rate = (50.446 ÷ 257.971) × 100
    Inflation Rate = 0.1955 × 100
    Inflation Rate = 19.55%

  4. Step 4: Interpret the Result

The result tells you the percentage change in price of goods and services over the period.

In this example, 19.55% means that prices increased by 19.55% from January 2020 to January 2024. In other words, what cost $100 in January 2020 would cost about $119.55 in January 2024.

Practical Examples

Example 1: Annual Inflation (2023)

  • December 2022 CPI: 296.797
  • December 2023 CPI: 306.746
  • Calculation: ((306.746 - 296.797) ÷ 296.797) × 100
  • Result: 3.4% inflation in 2023

Example 2: 10-Year Inflation

  • January 2014 CPI: 233.916
  • January 2024 CPI: 308.417
  • Calculation: ((308.417 - 233.916) ÷ 233.916) × 100
  • Result: 31.8% inflation over 10 years

Example 3: Negative Inflation (Deflation)

  • July 2008 CPI: 219.964
  • July 2009 CPI: 215.351
  • Calculation: ((215.351 - 219.964) ÷ 219.964) × 100
  • Result: -2.1% (deflation)

Converting Dollar Amounts for Inflation

To find what a past dollar amount is worth today (or vice versa), use this formula:

New Amount = Original Amount × (CPI End ÷ CPI Start)

Example: What is $1,000 in 2000 worth in 2024?

  • 2000 annual average CPI: 172.2
  • 2024 annual average CPI: 313.7 (estimated)
  • Calculation: $1,000 × (313.7 ÷ 172.2)
  • Result: $1,000 × 1.822
  • Answer: $1,822

This means $1,000 in 2000 has the same buying power as $1,822 in 2024.

Things to Consider When Calculating Inflation

Choose the Right Time Period

For annual inflation, use December to December or annual averages. For specific comparisons, use the exact months and years you're interested in.

Use Consistent Data

Always use CPI-U (urban consumers) data for general calculations. It covers about 93% of the U.S. population.

Compound Inflation

Remember that inflation compounds. This means that the change in inflation over three years is calculated including the year-to-year increases across those 3 years. Three years of 3% inflation equals 9.27% total, not 9%.

Real vs. Nominal

Remember to distinguish between nominal values (face value) and real values (inflation-adjusted).

Frequently Asked Questions

What if I need monthly inflation instead of annual?

Use the same formula but with consecutive months. For example, to find inflation from March to April 2024: ((313.548 - 312.332) ÷ 312.332) × 100 = 0.39%

How do I calculate average inflation over multiple years?

For the geometric mean (more accurate): Annual Average = ((CPI End ÷ CPI Start)^(1/years) - 1) × 100

Example for 10 years: (using Example #2 above)
((308.417 ÷ 233.916)^(1/10) - 1) × 100 = 2.8% average annual inflation

What is the difference between CPI-U and CPI-W?

CPI-U covers all urban consumers (about 93% of population). CPI-W covers urban wage earners and clerical workers (about 29% of population). Use CPI-U for general calculations.

Can I use this formula for other countries?

Yes, the formula works with any country's CPI data. Just ensure you are using CPI data from that specific country.

Tools and Resources

October 2025 Consumer Price Index data was not available because of a US Government Shutdown. We calculate the inflation for October 2025 by taking the geometric mean of the data from September and November 2025. This is the method recommended by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (bls.gov).
