  2. Calculate Volume (ft3) as L × W × D (in feet): 60 × 10 × 0.5 = 300 ft³
  3. Convert volume to cubic yards: 300 ft³ ÷ 27 = ~11.11 yd³
  4. Calculate weight using material density. Your base material has a density of 1.4 tons/yd³: Weight in tons = 11.11 yd³ × 1.4 tons/yd³ = ~15.6 tons
  5. Add 5–10% extra for waste and compaction. You estimate that ordering about 8% extra would cover waste and compaction of the base material. 15.6 tons × 0.08 = 1.25 additional tons. Add the amounts together: 15.6 tons + 1.25 tons = 16.85 tons

Road Base Terms to Know

Subgrade:
The natural ground under the road. You prepare and strengthen it so it can support the layers above.
Base course (road base):
The crushed rock layer that sits on the subgrade. It spreads load and provides a stable surface.
Fines:
The very small particles (sand/silt-sized) in the mix. The right amount helps lock the rock together, but too much fines can turn the mix to mud.
Gradation, Well-Graded:
The size spread of the stones. A well-graded mix has a good ratio of big, medium and small stones that pack tightly.
Compaction:
The process of rolling the base so the stones interlock and air voids shrink. Proper compaction makes the base strong.
Lift:
One layer of material placed and compacted at a time. Roads are built in lifts to get even, thorough compaction.
Optimum Moisture Content (OMC):
The moisture level that lets the base compact best—"just damp enough." A base that is too dry or too wet has poor density.
Proctor density:
A lab-measured target for how dense the compacted base should be. You compact in the field to meet a set percentage of the Proctor density number.
Plasticity Index (PI):
A measure of how sticky and clay-like the fines are. Lower PI means the base resists pumping and rutting.
Crown (cross-slope):
A slight, downward 2% slope across the road surface. This slope helps shed water so the base stays dry and lasts longer.
