Say you’re approaching finals and want to quickly understand how to allocate your study time. In one subject you need a minimum of 85% on the final to reach your target course grade.

In another subject you need at least 75% on the final to reach your ideal grade. With the final grade calculator you can quickly see that you should dedicate more time and effort to studying the second subject.

Calculate Your Final Grade

This calculator uses the final grade formula:

Where:

• F = Final exam grade
• G = Grade you want for the class
• w = % weight of the final exam divided by 100, which is simply weight as a decimal
• C = Your current grade

This is the math to calculate the final grade you want to achieve:

1. Divide weight of the final exam by 100 to get weight as a decimal, w.
2. Find the innermost parentheses: subtract w from 1.
3. Find the next set of parentheses: multiply the result from step two by C, your current grade.
4. Subtract the result of step 3 from G, the grade you want for the class.
5. Divide this by w. The result is the grade you need on the final exam.

The final grade calculation might seem like a lot, but it’s not hard. Start with the math in the innermost parentheses, 1 – w. This means subtract the weight of the final as a decimal from 1.

The second step is to look at the next level of parentheses. Multiply your first result by C, your course grade entering the final.

Next, subtract this result from G, the grade you would like for the course. Finally, divide by w.

The result is the score you need on the final exam to reach your goal grade in this subject.

Calculate Your Course Grade

Sometimes you'll receive your final exam grade but the instructor hasn't yet calculated final course grades. You can use this calculator to find your grade for the class if you know your final exam score.

Use the course grade formula:

• G = Grade you'll receive for the class
• F = Final exam grade
• w = % weight of the final exam divided by 100, which is simply weight as a decimal
• C = Your class grade going into the final

This is the math to calculate your course grade if you know your final exam score:

Example Final Exam Grade Calculation

Suppose your grade in Statistics is 85%. You want to get at least an A- or 90% in the class for the term. What score do you need on the final exam if it is worth 40% of your grade?

Using the final grade formula above, you want a 90 in the class and you currently have an 85. The final is worth 40% of the course grade.

First, convert the weight of the final exam from percent to decimal: 40 ÷ 100 = 0.40. Then follow the steps to complete the final grade calculation.

So if you have an 85 in the class, you want a 90 for the course, and the final exam is worth 40%. You’ll need a 97.5 on the final to get a 90 overall for the course.

Example Final Course Grade Calculation

Suppose going into finals your grade in Economics was 91%. Your final exam score was 88.6% and it was worth 15% of your grade for the course. What is your overall grade in the course?

Using the course grade formula above, F = 88.6, w = 15, and C = 91.

First, convert the weight of the final exam from percent to decimal: 15 ÷ 100 = 0.15. Then follow the steps to complete the final course grade calculation.

So you went into the final with a class grade of 91 and got 88.6 on the final which was worth 15% of the course grade. Your final grade in the class would be 90.64.
